Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarship 2024/25 entry is open for interested candidates. The scholarships have been designed to enable students from asylum-seeker backgrounds to progress to higher level study.

Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarship Benefit

Newcastle University is proud to support equal access to higher education and is pleased to offer sanctuary scholarships consisting of full tuition fee support and a bursary for living expenses for applicants wishing to study at the University.

Start Date and Duration

Commences September 2024 for the full duration of the student’s degree programme.

Application Closing Date

The closing date for applications is 5th April 2024. No further applications for 2024 entry will be considered after this date.

Eligibility Criteria and Requirements

1.The following categories of applicants can apply under this scheme:

  • Asylum seekers
  • Children of asylum seekers and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (e.g.children migrants under 18)
  • Applicants with refugee status (ineligible for Student Finance government funding)

2. Applicants must be resident in the UK at the time they apply for consideration under this scheme. Preference will be given to applicants from the North East of England (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland, North Cumbria).

3. Applicants must be applying for admission to Newcastle University. Applicants applying for a first degree will receive priority consideration.

4. Expected grades must meet the entry requirements of the relevant degree.
5. Applicants must meet the English language standards of the course or have a relevant qualification demonstrating English language skills.

6. Applicants must be unable to access mainstream funding, for example from Student Finance England or a local authority grant.

Who Can Apply

Sanctuary Scholarship applications will be considered from students applying to the following programmes:

  • Undergraduate Degree Programmes
  • Postgraduate Degree Programmes
  • Doctorate Level Programmes (PhD)

The following applicants are not eligible to apply for Sanctuary Scholarship funding:

  • Current students
    Study abroad and exchange students
  • Applicants for non-degree awards (Higher Education Diploma, Higher Education Certificate, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma)
How to Apply

Applications for the Sanctuary Scholarship must be made using the official scholarship online form.

Important Notice

Candidates must give verification of their migration status and a reference when submitting their applications. The reference ought to come from somebody who has known the candidate for a critical sum of time and is recognisable with their individual circumstances.

Applications will only be considered if they include a reference that is signed, dated, and written on official letterhead.
